In late 1996, the merger of the emergency practices at the University, Christ, and Jewish Hospitals was accomplished in the Health Alliance through the creation of Vanguard Medical, which serves to provide enormous stability with Health Alliance administration and medical staff, physician recruiting and retention, resident and medical student education, and finances.
Vanguard Medical is active in the education of resident physicians and medical students in the emergency departments of the Christ, Jewish, and University Hospitals. Emergency patients are cared for and residents are supervised on a one-to-one basis by board certifi ed emergency physicians at each of these clinical sites. Along with the education of resident physicians and medical students, research is an important mission of Vanguard Medical. Research, particularly in the areas of emergency cardiac care and neurovascular care, toxicology, preventative emergency medicine, and hyperbaric medicine, plays an important role at all of the emergency departments staffed by Vanguard Medical physicians.
The Vanguard Medical Emergency Physicians are dedicated clinicians, and very active in the community through activities such as directing emergency medical services for the city of Cincinnati and many surrounding communities, team doctor for area school sports, and various committee memberships. This combination of patient care, education, research, and community service is the foundation of the Department of Emegency Medicine of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. All of our Emergency Physicians have academic appointments in the Department of Emergency Medicine.
