In late 1996, the merger of the emergency practices at the University, Christ, and Jewish Hospitals was accomplished by awarding the services contract to University Emergency Physicians, Inc. Within the structure of the Health Alliance, this single practice entity, UC Emergency Physicians, serves to provide enormous stability with Health Alliance administration, high quality emergency physician recruiting and retention, outstanding resident and medical student education, and prudent financial management.

UC Emergency Physicians continues to be active in the education of resident physicians and medical students in the emergency departments of the University and Jewish Hospitals. As of March 31, 2009, UC Emergency Physicians will not staff the emergency department at the Christ Hospital. It will staff the emergency department at the West Chester Medical Center when it opens May 11, 2009. First, second, third and fourth year emergency medicine residents now rotate through the University Hospital and Jewish Hospital emergency departments. The residents are supervised on a one-to-one basis by residency trained, board certified emergency physicians at each clinical site. In addition, the administrative elective in emergency medicine, based at Jewish Hospital, has become a very popular elective with the fourth year emergency residents. The faculty of UC Emergency Physicians are also involved in the didactic and clinical teaching of residents in Internal Medicine and Surgery at Jewish Hospital and previously with Internal Medicine residents at Christ Hospital.

Along with the education of resident physicians and medical students, research continues to be an extremely important mission of UC Emergency Physicians. Research in the fields of emergency neurovascular, cardiovascular, emergency medical services, and preventative emergency medicine continues to play an important role in 2008-2009 at all of the emergency departments staffed by UC Emergency Physicians.
